What was your random act of kindness?

What was your random act of kindness?

Today I am happy to be a part of The Duchess Guide’s Royally Kind blogging event, whereby the Duchess herself, Jill Brown, has organized a lovely bunch of online sisters to commit, and then blog about, one random act of kindness performed this week.

First, let me say that I am a big believer in said “acts.”  I personally, try to perform mini acts on a regular basis - you know, the ones that can make or break somebody else’s morning.  Like holding the door open, letting someone into my lane on the freeway, not racing to the last empty parking spot (cutting off other cars in the process) or scooping up the last chocolate chip topping at Yogurtland while the line snakes behind me.

It is these small acts, I believe, that can completely pull a person out of Column A (average) and over into B (extraordinary).  Do this a few times per day and you will start to feel better in general, (even if occasionally it means you end up driving around for 20 minutes because you let the lady with three kids get the last parking spot at The Grove).

However, this week, my random act was a little more personal and a little more specific; I made what would be considered a valuable introduction between two business colleagues, expecting nothing (of course) in return.

(Disclaimer: The very fact that I’m talking about it kind of goes against my belief in not doing things for the sake of recognition, but since this is a blog about my random act, I’ll excuse myself this one time.)

Basically it went like this: Colleague A and I have been working together for a few months.  (We have completely different professional backgrounds and had come together randomly on a project).   One day, after not seeing him for awhile, the conversation turned to our respective side projects.  He told me he was working on a book proposal.  I asked if he had an agent.  He said no, and I said, let me know when you are ready and I will introduce you to mine.

Now, as a writer I know that another writer would sooner walk down the street naked, dripping in honey than turn you on to their contacts, especially if that contact is the ever elusive and highly coveted, Literary Agent.  Writers tend to be anxious, jealous types, who rarely like to see one another succeed, let alone surpass, each other.  (But this is a whole, other topic).

However, a few days ago, I got a Facebook message from this colleague asking if I could indeed, make that intro now.  Not a problem, I said, asked for a logline and bio, and then (actually!) sent the whole thing off to my agent along with a casual introduction. Turns out, she liked the pitch and they are now discussing how to proceed. Eureka!

I hope he gets a deal and she gets a sale, two huge accomplishments in this ever-changing, clunky, and highly subjective profession.  Will I reap any tangible rewards?  Probably not.  But I also didn’t lose anything either, except maybe a half hour of my time.   It was the opportunity to make a life changing introduction (believe me, going from “unpublished” to “published” can mean a serious status shift in one’s career), so how could I not?  Even if the project goes no further, two people will now hopefully view me in a different light and perhaps even go out of their way to do something nice for me if/when the opportunity arises.

I can simply hope for more good Karma points to add to this life’s balance sheet.

Where Have I Been?

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

It’s been a long time, my lovelies, since I have found the time to post here, which is both a good thing and a bad thing.  I’ve had several new opportunities come my way (first mentioned in the post below); some that have been good, some great, and some disappointing.

XbarH Lodge, Orderville, UT

XbarH Lodge, Orderville, UT

The best part is that they have taken me around the country: to Utah, Las Vegas and Miami, and hopefully, to NYC in the fall.  I’ve met a ton of new people, made some new friends, and introduced me to things I feel lucky to have experienced.  I also learned a lesson or two during my hiatus from this blog and that is - 1) always take opportunities that present themselves (especially if they are new and challenging) and 2) you will be surprised by which ones fail and which succeed, learning a lot about yourself in the process.

I am now focusing on a handful of projects that are not only close to my heart, but stretching my knowledge and abilities to new extremes.  I am strengthening old muscles and building new ones.  Sometimes it hurts, but that’s growth for ya, right?

In the coming weeks, I will share some of these new initiatives with you, as they will affect this blog and its direction.  Please, tell me what you have been up to these past few months.  Have you tried anything new?  Challenged yourself? Made a promise or commitment to yourself or someone else?

Catch me up.  I’ve missed you all.

Thank You for Your Patience!

Pink Carpet Event and the Hyatt Regency

Pink Carpet Event @ the Hyatt Regency

Thank you dear readers for not abandoning me or my little blog while we have been on an unforeseen hiatus. Due to a lot of new opportunities in my life, and a tiny technical snafu with my web hosting company (PowWeb: I loved you, hated you and am now tolerating you), I have not been able to update my site for some time. However, I am back and have tons of good things to report.

I am excited about a few new business ventures I am working on, some great new friends I have made, and am feeling optimistic about life in general.  One of the exciting things I am working on is a fantastic project with Luxe Life Events; their Pink Carpet Event will be held later this month in LA and will be a totally fun afternoon of shopping, cocktails, beauty treatments, with a KILLER gift bag for VIP ticket holders.  We’ve got some great women business owners on board - some of whom you might recognize from this blog or my Twitter feed (um, hello Catherine Cassidy of UStyled and Grace Chon of Shine Pet Photos - mwah!) as well as great retail and beauty brands.  We are thrilled to have online retailer 365Hangers as a retail sponsor, Philips’ Crystalize as one of our major beauty sponsors (they will be doing complimentary skin analysis with their brand new, state of the art computer), as well as Don Cardona as our liquor sponsor (hello Sunday afternoon margaritas!).  If you will be in town on April 25th, please come down to the Hyatt Regency in Century City for some fun and make sure you introduce yourself to me IRL!

HPRA Panel at Shutters in Santa Monica

HPRA Panel at Shutters in Santa Monica

Ouch.

That’s the sound of my two worlds colliding.  I know most of you come here for your dose of women-friendly stories and relationship news.  However, I am an actual human being and sometimes leave the house to pursue other professional interests.

That said, I will be moderating a panel this week for the HPRA (Hispanic Public Relations Association) on social media best practices and measurement.  If you care to join us, please do.  All are welcome.  I am attaching a link to their site where you can register and purchase a ticket.

Here’s some info: PR and advertising social marketing experts present best practices for measuring social media when used as part of the marketing mix. Determine if your client, business or organization’s social media participation can help make an impact on business results.

Spurned Mistress Gets Revenge the 2.0 Way

“Splashy headlines used to be the exclusive domain of Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison, known for his aggressive business practices and colorful lifestyle. No more.

Yav His lieutenant, Charles E. Phillips, president of the technology giant and a member of President Obama’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board, stepped into a harsh spotlight this week as his spurned mistress plastered San Francisco, New York and Atlanta with billboards revealing their affair.”
